Having balance issues and recurrent falls can make it difficult to stay active in your daily life. Fortunately, it is possible to treat balance issues with non-invasive treatment options, like physical therapy. At Back in Motion Physical Therapy, we treat those with diagnoses such as BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), vestibular dysfunction, Parkinson’s Disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis and peripheral neuropathy.
Balance issues can develop for several reasons, but muscle strength and muscle function imbalances are some of the more common reasons. As we age, muscle issues can lead to difficulties in staying upright, walking, or otherwise staying balanced. These muscle issues can be addressed with physical training to strengthen and recondition weakened muscles. We also incorporate strategies for regaining balance to prevent falls.
We have a therapist who is certified in LSVT BIG which is a program specifically designed to help with movement in those who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease but can also help with other neurological conditions.
We also have a SoloStep harness system that prevents falls, therefore encouraging patients to challenge their balance without a fear of falling.
Some of the most common reasons why people experience balance issues include:
Treating balance issues that are caused by muscle problems is what we focus on at Back in Motion Physical Therapy. In particular, with Parkinson’s disease symptoms of slow movement, stiffness, and loss of balance, we work to increase balance and movement. By working with one of our physical therapists, we can create a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs.
We start with an assessment of different muscle groups to determine where the specific imbalance is.
If it is being caused by a weak muscle, we work to retrain that muscle. If it is caused by muscles that have trouble working together, we help retrain your brain to correct the problem. That way, you can maintain the level of functionality and independence needed to live your life to the fullest.
